3 Alarming mistakes you are doing, that are murdering your jewelry!
- Putting on your jewelry first. Have you heard the phrase “Last on, first off”? Well, that should be a rule to follow when using jewelry. Hairspray, perfumes, sunblock and lotions can dull the appearance of your jewelry. These products can also get stuck in your jewelry, blending together to create a corrosive mixture that can tarnish metals over time. This also means, that your jewelry may collect a lot of grime. Try to avoid this problem, by always putting on your jewelry after your cosmetic products, or any other sprays.
- The cooking and after cooking. Most of us have cooked at a certain point in life. Either you love it or not, but cooking everyday is just inevitable. What we don’t realize, is that oils and grease from cooking can build up inside the cavities of rings and other jewelry pieces. This leads to deterioration, discoloration and can seriously damage the structure of your beloved pieces.
Likewise, the process of cleaning after cooking. Even if your jewelry is water resistant, the use of chemicals to clean can damage and deteriorate your jewelry. Specially your rings will suffer the most since we can knock them against the surfaces we’re cleaning. This can damage claws and prong, which can lead to loosen gems like precious stones like diamonds or zirconia.
3. Sleeping time. I can’t stay still while sleeping, and if you are just like me, I have bad news for you. Our constant and unconscious motions put rings, bracelets, hoops and other pieces at risk of being smacked, bumped, or scratched on various surfaces. Our beautiful necklaces can get caught on blankets, pillows, or even our pajamas.
All this movement can lead breakage. Our chains can stretch, tangle, or just increase the risk of future breakages due to the constant pulling and tension on them. To avoid all this just make sure you remove all your jewelry pieces before going to bed.
A final tip – before bedtime avoid storing your jewelry in humid places like the bathroom. As well, avoid leaving them in the open air since dust can tarnish fine jewelry like silver faster. To prevent taggling and scratching, we recommend storing your jewelry in the special bags it comes with, or a jewelry box.
Now you know what to do, and what not to do to extend the life of your jewelry pieces.
